Just bought an iPhone 5. I have used Macs for 8 years so am familiar with OS. We travel mainly in the West. I am trying to decide which apps would be most useful for us. There is iExit for what is off interstates, Gas Guru and gas Buddy for fuel locations and pricing, All Stays and RV Parking for campgrounds, Weatherbug, Farenheit, Weather Live for weather, etc. Which is the most helpful for location, reviews, info, etc.?There are a few that would be helpful to us in particular: The Photographers Ephemeris for sunrise/sunset, moonrise/moonset, shadows, etc., iBird West for bird ID, Peaks West to id mountains, Star Walk, Sky Guide, Sky View for looking at the sky in places where you can actually see the night sky.Any other apps which you have found indispensable? Like wifi finder, apps for posting travel blogs (I use Wordpress but its app was given 3?s), photo organizer apps, lists/organizers for camping supplies to remember to bring, any other photography apps? This little gadget will make life so much easier or more complicated.

I use one called WAZE.. It is a free app that is updated by users realtime.. just log on and it will tell you all kinds of things on your route.. police (hidden or visible), hazzards,,construction,,It will pop up on your phone or speak to you if your linked blue tooth.. tell you what is ahead about a mile or so ahead of time... once there either hit not there and it will go away for the next user,, or hit thanks and it will stay there until someone hits not there. You can also use it as a map program and it will tell you all the traffic and stuff in your way.Program in what type of fuel you use and it will save that and look for it for when asked.. My IT guy gave it to me and I use it every day

We have the IPHONE 4.0 here with unlimited data. This is a 16GB memory model. We use it for downstreaming TV programs from ABC CBS CNN etc and it performs very good with no skipping or reloading etc... The TV programs are one day old but that doesn't really bother us...I am looking now for the proper cable to go from the IPHONE to one of my large screen TVs video inputs to get this up on the big screen.Works great anywhere we get VERIZON cellphone service which is just about anywhere in the US I guess...I also use the SCANNER app alot as well. This give us POLICE-RESCUE SQUAD-PUBLIC SERVICE all over the country... A great internet radio scanner that passes along all of the live audio from the new scanner channels on-going now. My regular police type scanner don't work anymore since all of them are moving to the new scanner formats...Roy Ken

I never thought about a scanner. That would be helpful to know about accidents so we could take an alternate route. In Southern Colorado, there was a sad accident where a cattle trailer fell over the bank next to a river and we were held up for several hours. The road was narrow so it was difficult to turn around.We got the 32gb because we shoot lots of photos so i can share my rockstar images plus I love my music so can store my faves. iBird West takes up lots of storage as does Audubon's wildflowers. We too use Verizon as out in the West you can see that coverage is spotty. And, w ego where you find fewer people like the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau.

Never ask a man what kind of smartphone he has. If it's an Iphone, he'll tell you. If not, why embarrass him.. :)

I got to listen in on both the Calif and Boston police things play by play... The BOSTON scanner had some of it blocked but was right there with them for 99 percent of everything that was going on.

The only problem I have is I like to listen to two or three locations at the same time. Its better to do this on a computer instead of the smartphones as they only let you listen to one app at a time. I have all my favorite police scanner locations on my computer. Local towns and home town back in Ill and Wichita Falls. Get to hear family names sometimes haha...

The APP ICON looks like the front of a radio scanner.

You can go to the home page and select the state and county live audio you want to listen to. It will list all that is available to listen too. Yet another way to keep track of your kids when you are away haha...

If you like taking and sharing pictures get Dropbox and learn to use the photo album.
Get the app called 'Reduce' to shrink your pics without destoying them. Upload them to Dropbox, get the link and share with everybody.

If you use sat t v Dishpointer AR is very handy. Super imposes the sats over your camera to find a hole in trees.

Shopper is a handy shopping aid. Keep lists of stores and you both can add/delete.

Fooducate is useful for telling you what is bad for u. Scan the barcode and put it back on the shelf.

Some good recipe apps.

We spend every other summer in the mountain west, mainly western Colorado. Some of the apps I enjoy are: The Audobon series, trees, insects, reptiles and wildflowers

National Parks by National Geographic - doesn't have them all but the ones they have are very well done.

Low Clearance by Allstays - handy when off the Interstate system
Weather Chanell, Weather Bug and Imap Weather Radio tracks your location for alerts to bad weather. Then I have a couple of Hurrican apps for here on the Gulf Coast.
Plus the ereader apps, Kindle and Audible for listening to books.

When in the west, away from light congestion of the cities, the App Night Sky is enjoyable as it points out what you can see from that location, when you are outside and look up.

These are some of the main ones I use when out west with our RV.
