As you have seen video cards get really expensive, and elaborate. 3D graphics is the reason most buy them, and if your not gaming , they really aren't needed.
Audio? What are you running Windows wise? Unless you still have a Windows 2000 or xp unit, chances are adding good amplified speakers are all that you need. Ok Most any new desktop unit will have graphics that will make your monitor look great. Amplified speakers will sound good but like a home stereo, sound is subjective.
Get a "name brand" machine, windows 10 and you will think lightning is coming off the box and boards. If you want to get into custom builds you can spend as much as you wish, but for basic web surfing, email, and non specialized use, they are going to be very capable. Myself I have an out of the box e machine upstairs and an Acer down, one with Windows 7 the other upgraded to 10. Neither cost over 300.
