Newest/Best Verizon Jetpack?

Today I switched our Verizon account from the More Everything Plan to the new plan, with a considerable monthly savings. I want to buy a mifi jetpack and add it to the plan for $10/mo. Since the new plan doesn't subsidize my equipment purchases, I'm free to buy whatever works, from whomever has the best price. (If anyone even undercuts Verizon itself, I don't know.)

Is the Mifi 6620L the one to get?
  • Funny you should mention the topic... I just did the same with our Verizon account today. Several weeks ago I ordered (and received) the MiFi 6620L and activated it today. Changing plans got me 6 GB more data for less money. I haven't had the chance to use it much, but the JetPack seems to work well.

  • I just went from a 4410(?) to the 6620. Battery life is much longer and the menu is easier to use. The 6620 does take noticeably longer to boot up and I can't tell any difference in cellular signal strength or speed in marginal areas.

I thought that 4 year newer technology would help on the cellular side, but it really has not. Overall I am happy with the switch.
  • I have the Verizon jet pack wifi 5510L. It works well. We also have the ATT sierra wifi. They all seem to be about the same. Interesting about buying the equip now.
  • Check out mobilekarma.com for good deals on used phones & jetpacks. Often there's not much difference between 1 generation and the next.
  • I do notice that the 6620L covers two LTE frequency bands where say the 4620 covers one (700).
  • the new AWS band is being used to increase bandwidth and efficiency inn Metro area's, which are getting way crowded

Couldn't get their address to work.
  • interesting.

I am coming up on my Verizon jetpack 5510L ... 2 year deal...
I will just keep it running for now.
  • besides the 6620L

these hot spot devices also support the new XLTE on the AWS 1700/2100mhz bands

Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot 5510L,
Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot MHS 291L
and Verizon 4G LTE USB Modem UML295

no absolute need to replace the 5510L if its working OK
  • Late last year I went from a 4620 to a 6620 - I have to say the 4620 greatly outperformed the 6620. Doing a side-by-side comparison during the time that both were activated I saw the following:
    • the 4620 gave me a solid 5 bars of 4G LTE signal at my house
    • the 6620 gives me anywhere from 0 bars to 3 bars of 4G LTE signal
    • the 4620 gave me a solid 5 bars of wifi signal if it was within 30 feet of the computer
    • the 6620 gives me 2 to 3 bars of wifi signal only if the computer is within 10 feet

Verizon has replaced the 6620 once (no difference) and says that my home should have great signal since I've got 3 cell towers within a mile of the house - I'm ready to re-activate the old 4620...
