This is assuming that there is no actual drain on the batteries:
IF.....the batteries are healthy and fully charged going in.....there is no need for a maintenance charger below 30 F because the "self discharge" almost disappears when it's that cold.
In addition, a healthy AGM should easily sit for several months with NO noticeable loss of charge even without a charger.
I have no idea why they make that recommendation......but following it should NOT create any problem
