To measure voltage requires one to connect the probes to the terminals that supply the voltage and current, AC or DC. To read current your meter must be in series with the wire providing the current ( breaking the wire) to the system. But you do not need to brake the wire to read current AC or DC with an amp meter. You can go to your Sears store and buy a Clamp Meter that will clamp around the wire and read current. Not all Clamp Meters read DC current, make sure you read the package. They may have a clamp on the meter but it may only read AC current. The meter can also be used for voltage and resistance measurement. The clamp looks like a doughnut at the of the meter.
