What OS are you using? If it's WIN 7, then according to AV-Test.org, Norton Internet Security 2013 effect on system performance scored an equivalent to MS Security Essentials. However, Norton 360 may be even more taxing, but was not rated?
Both the free versions of Avast and AVG effect on performance was slightly less than Norton, but scored lower in overall protection.
The paid versions of Kaspersky and Comodo both rated significantly less taxing on system performance than Norton, while providing better protection. However, Comodo had a much higher false positive rating.
MS Security Essentials had a perfect score for false positives, but was rated the worst in protection of all AV software AV-Test.org rated.
