I have a new Garmin Nuvi 2415 GPS that was a gift. I never bought one because I had a smart phone. But the GPS is MUCH better.
*it's easier to enter locations
*it's easier to save locations
*it's easier to search for things nearby... like gas stationse, etc. When you do that, you get a long list, with the closest ones at the top.
*the screen automatically zooms in on the area close to you
*the map is much easier to read
*the voice directions are much more specific and easier to understand---you get "turn left in 1/2 mile and then stay left"
If all you ever did was travel on your beaten path with someone to help you navigate, the smartphone would suffice. But I found the GPS to be much better.
Mine came with a car charger & a USB charger/connection to a computer. Right after I got it, I hooked it up to the computer and got a 2 hour download (at fast speed) of maps and updates. So be sure to do that when you have time and data available.
I also always travel with a paper map for backup. I have the GPS set to avoid un-paved roads. You can also set the GPS to avoid highways, if you want to see the off-interstate sights.
