Smart phones are great for a lot of things in a pinch. But like any multi function solution they can never beat a dedicated device. By that same token a GPS can't completely replace paper maps.

They are all just tools. For some people a Leatherman is all they need for the repair they need to do. Others need more comprehensive and dedicated tools. You have to decide what you need and what works best for your situation.
