I chucked paper maps in 1996 in favor of GPS and chucked my dedicated GPS in favor of my smartphone about 3 years ago.
There are quite a few posts above that are loaded with incorrect info, too numerous for me to go back and point out each incorrect post.
As far as I'm concerned my smartphone does everything better than a stand alone GPS unit.
The smartphone, coupled with Google, has virtually unlimited POIs. I don't need to go to any website to download POIs.
No data is needed in order to use GPS navigation provided you use an app like CoPilot.
I can easily use the smartphone to see what services are around me or around a particular exit.
The best thing about using my smartphone as my GPS navigator is that I ALWAYS have it with me. I can use it in the car, RV, when walking\hiking, when riding in someone else vehicle, etc...
I'm sure something better will come along in the future that I can't imagine but for now, I think my smartphone is the best solution.
