I use my smartphone (google maps) a lot. I like the integration with desktop google maps and I am always scouting out future camping spots, which I photograph and geotag. However, I boondock about 75% of the time and am often out of cell range. This is where google maps falls on its face, unless you plan far enough ahead and can cache the area where you loose cell reception ahead of time.
So, in the end I always make sure I have my Garmin...just in case.
I thought at one point that Co-pilot might solve this issue with its onboard maps. I bought the whole package with worldwide maps. However, after about a year of use it has become more and more unstable and is now useless. Tech support has been unable to resolve it.
