There were 2 root problems all related to age.
1. The round BIOS battery was bad.
2. The operator (me) is 80 years old and when I installed the new BIOS battery I did not remove the plastic insulator from the + side of the battery. Once removed to check the battery voltage the problem was solved.
All is working well now.

Years ago I learned how to build and setup those old computers. . . 386, 486, etc. There was a specific order to the way you needed to do things in order to get them to run right. It was a challenge back then, but my son and I took a class at a local community college to learn how to do some stuff. That battery gaff was typical of stuff we would run in to. Fortunately, I triggered an interest with my son and today he is a network security engineer and doing very well with his company. Those little problems and solutions we found have really paid off for him.
Glad you found the problem. Brought back many memories!
