Please edecate me on Chromebooks

I've always used Windows laptops and know a little about other operating systems. I may want to buy another laptop, and noticed that Chromebooks are quite a bit less expensive.
Is it true that a chromebook can only be used when Internet is available? Wouldn't that be an impediment if you wanted to use the device at other times? If you're using a Chromebook, how do you like it? Thanks in advance for your input and advice.

  • I think when you compare what you get for the price you have to pay and then compare that to a real laptop, you'll go with a true laptop. I don't pay more than $500 and yet get some very nice features. I could get one for much less and it would still be much more useful than a ChromeBook. I'm not a fan of Google at all. I was years ago but today they're all about targeted marketing and they never forget. I use DuckDuckGo as my browser (the browser that doesn't track you) for security and privacy reasons.

They do not have hard drives. They do have memory though. You can do things offline, you just have to enable the offline feature of some of the programs.

  • Mine is pretty much a brick sans internet. I can access files on a thumb drive, but there's not much I can do with them.

Most of my 'work' is text composition on a simple .txt file. There is no text editor I'm aware of on my CB, so I go online to a board like this one and use its Reply box for formatting. Copy/paste to wherever it needs to go.

You may want to google up Chromebook stuff.. there may be a whole lot I don't know.

I really like mine. Instant bootup, syncs with all my other google devices, no constant updates. (Well there may be that I don't know about). Since I have internet with me at all times, I find it works just fine.

Here's some Posts with Chromebook in them on here.
  • While you are waiting I'd do a Google search for `chromebooks reviews'.
