Problems After TV Change Out

Just removed old Sony Tvs and had new digital TVs installed in my coach. I was picking up local TV stations here in Nappanee. I cannot get any stations now. I'm still using the Winegard Entertainment Select unit to select antenna, cable, etc. The only change to any electronics was that I removed the old converter I had installed after the switch to digital by TV stations. The TV is a Visio. Any ideas ? Do I need to add another electronic component ? When I do the scan for channels, it finds no channels. There is reception in the area on antennas. Any advice appreciated.

  • It has nothing to do with the TV. It's most likely that you did not get the cabling right when you took the converter box out of the loop. You are going to need to verify that you have direct lines going in the right directions.
Does the Winegard Video Control box have an on/off switch or (looking at the back side) 12V wires coming into it? If so, you need to make sure the coax running directly from the roof top antenna connects to the post that reads TV Antenna. This is the connection that provides power to the roof top antenna and the amp inside the head.
If the VCC does not have a power supply then the power for the antenna is coming from the wall plate described above. If that's the case you will want to ensure the coax from the antenna is connected to the connection in the wall plate that says ANTENNA and there will be a connection on that same circuit board that says TV1 (or TV2) and the coax from that connection need to run to the VCC that says From Ant. or similar.
  • With digital signals you need to "see" the signal with your batwing BEFORE you do the scan on the TV, If the batwing angle is off the TV will not find anything. Not like the old days where you could find a fuzzy signal and then rotate the batwing to improve it. With digital it either sees a signal to it does not - no in between.

I use this Sure Lock digital signal finder.

I leave it connected to one of the unused TV outlet on the distribution box, turn it on and let it hang out of the cabinet where I can see it from upstairs, then rotate the batwing until it has a strong signal. THEN I use the search function on the TV. Works every time.

Sometimes you will get good signals in a couple of directions and might need to turn the batwing and re-scan to get other stations.
  • Get your local RVTech person to come out and show you how it works.

What is an antenna booster switch ?

It's the 'power on' button on the winegard distribution unit.

When using antenna it has to be ON
Then push in the TV/Ant button on unit
    Set TV input to 'antenna'
    Then auto scan

This is provided your antenna head is pointed towards the TV Transponder Tower

When using cable/sat turn Winegard power button off
    Set TV input to cable/sat
    Auto scan
  • I have Visio. Need to select Scan all channels.
There set up can be a little fuzzy. Takes me a while to get OTA as I usually only use SAT or Cable.
  • It's a small button next to where your TV coax cable screws into the RV. It needs to be punched in and normally a small light will come on next to it.
  • Points to remember:

    Turn on antenna booster switch.
    Set input to "TV".
Make sure you have the input type set to "antenna".
Then let it run a full scan.
    Good luck...
  • I'm sure you have checked all the cable connections are correct. TV is set to antenna. Booster switch on. Never seen or used the Winegard box so can't help there.
