You don't have to be registered or participate if the owner does not lock it to the public. How many companies have a public viewable facebook:@ there are many that are a blog open to the public.

My Facebook address is in my signature line and the account is open to the public...anyone can see all of the content...I do have some photo albums that are closed to me...only because they represent work that I did a very long time ago and family photos.
On another note...you don't have to be a Facebook Friend to get updates...you sign on as a "follower"...I have some 50 people who follow The Digital Guy.
