question on Wineguard dish

Found this Satellite antenna with a tripod for sale. Seller inherited the unit so doesn't know much. Neither do I, although we need a unit.

Antenna is basically new, as in hardly used, but I don't know how old the technology is. Tripod is new in box and is Wineguard brand also.

For those that know...

What are pros?
What are cons?
Would you buy it at right price?
Ideas on value with tripod?

Guy is asking 300.00

Thanks

  • OP here, update.
I ended up buying the winegard carryout. As it turned out the guy had the 50' coax cable but not the power cable so I could not test it.

I ordered a power cable from Amazon and it came in today. The dish runs so hopefully it will work. Looks brand new in / out.

I also ordered a vip211 receiver. When it gets in I'll find out if I got a good deal or not. If it doesn't work I'll return the power cable and order a new dish and use the receiver on it.

Felt like taking a gamble, maybe it will work out. Got a new tripod still in the box no matter what.

    Thanks for all the input.
  • enblethen, Dish we have at home right now but we do keep changing back and forth so switching from Dish to Direct might be an advantage.

Pathway x2 was my 1 st choice if I go new. Didn't realize they were only Dish. Although from what I have read Dish is better for RV anyway.

I made the guy a low offer since it is untested, no warranty. We'll see
  • Thanks folks. You verified what I was thinking. Been told in the past that Winegard Pathway x2 is the way to go.

Guess I'll be looking for one of those instead. Then i'll be back or on utube trying to hook it up on my TT LOL
  • It only gets the western arc. Requires a separate power source. Not a great price for used no warranty.

For $100 more you can get a brand new Winegard Pathway X2. Yes it’s even bigger but that’s because it has a bigger dish which works better in the rain.

It also gets either eastern OR
western arc, which is a big advantage.
  • I have had good luck with my Carry Out.
I carry mine in the back of toad as it is too large to lay flat in compartment.
Unit can be set to either Dish or Direct by changing dip switch setting.
The cable (power) on dish end is crappy. I used a cable tie to hold connector in place. I leave this end connected.
Power to the dish is through a cigarette lighter plug. I changed this to a standard two connector pin plug, and added it's mate to a location on outside of rig rather then adding a cigarette plug.
I would also like the later smaller dish, but the Carry Out that I have works good.
I would be buying early Carry Out for $150-225. No more then $275
  • Is that on craigslist? That looks familiar. Have you gone to look at it? I had a guy with one that looks like that exact picture (it was a while ago so I am not 100% sure). Anyway, when I wanted to go take a look, he gave excuses like he was out of town or couldn't make it. He never asked for money, so I don't know if he was trying to scam me or was fishing for e-mail addresses or what. I got the scam vibe for sure.

Anyway, I have that one. I bought it from PPL motorhomes. I like it, but they have the smaller G2 that is smaller. I wish I had a smaller one. It is a little bulky - not heavy, just bigger than I would like.

Pro's - not having to try and find the satellites manually which can be a pain with non-auto satellite.
    Con's - big
At that price - no, there are 5 near me on Craigslist for $225 with a tri-pod. If you can't test it, then if it's broken it's worthless. If you can test it and it works, go with 2-250 in my opinion used.
Value of tripod - new $60, I see them for $25 usually. I don't have one as it can just sit on the ground for $0 worst case. The tripod only stands 1.5ft high anyway. I have a ladder mount for mine, but sometimes due to trees I have moved it forward to the front of the trailer on the roof.

To test it, there should be a cigarette lighter cable that plugs into it - just plug it in and you should hear it moving around until it lock on to the satellites. The only real way to see if it works is to use a directv/dish box and TV. That looks like the same one I have and I think inside you can flip a switch to make it switch from directv to dish if needed.

I have had mine for about 4+ years and it works great. I bought a cigarette lighter adapter that can plug into 110v so I don't have to run the wire to the front inside my trailer where there is an adapter.
