How well do they work? One day, I wrote three different drivers who had detectors on and working! What happened? By the time the driver realized he was in a field, I already had a clock on him. (Reaction time)
The newer ones that do not radiate, but use laser or light sources are the hardest to detect, but there are many out there working on a way to detect radar.
My advice?
If you are going to speed, even with a detector, expect to get caught. The best thing to do, especially in an RV is to obey the speed laws. You and people around you will live longer that way.
Cops will tell you all day long....don't bother. And if you get pulled dover with one on your windshield...you will get a ticket. This is true.
Two VERY close friends of ours happen to be captain and lieutenant (husband/wife.....wife is captain, hubby is lieutenant) within our main city limits of our city and tell us don't bother. Yet my record remains, and I will never be without one. And they have little to say about good detectors, even low price options.
Detectors work, as long as the user how to use it and react accordingly. END TOPIC. - peajayExplorerYears ago when I did have a detector in my car, the only times I got actual tickets instead of warnings are when I had the detector. Cops would see it and write me a ticket. No dectector in site, only got a warning.

My record over 25 years stands, not one speeding ticket while a radar detector was active in my car. And I drive aggressive in my sedan and daily commute. The detector lets you know when you are being tagged and if you're way over, gives you a second to respond with the break pedal. They do work...but only if you are responsive to the valid warnings!
- kfp673Explorer IIRadar detector has saved me from many tickets!! Most new work with laser as well which is important. You will get some false alarms, especially near shopping centers etc but if you are like me and feel that 55mph is crawling on many highways it will save you some tickets. Towing is a different story but empty you will not regret it. I have a passport.
- I use the WAZE app on my phone... All inputs are real and up to date by other waters (users).. Works unbelievable!!!! I don't go anywhere without turning it on...some of the hazards it can warn you are- police- hidden or visible , accidents , items on roadway. Vehicles on shoulder.. And many others...
- wa8yxmExplorer IIIThe problem with Radar detectors... First they can be falsed (Give an indication of radar when no radar is nearby) Second they give a false sense of security to the violator.. If you are for example, approaching one of those signs that says "Speed limit 55 you are going 90".. Well. then they work well, but the trooper.. He aims his gun at you, (Radar gun) Pulls the triggure and ZAP, he's got you no time to slow down.
And then there is LASCAR (Light assisted) uses only the light of the sun, no radiated signal for the detector to detect. And of course the old fashion pace clock.
Way too many ways for the smart officer to nail you with the detector.
My recommendation: Save your money and SLOW DOWN. - ventrmanExplorer

Why?? If you are pulling an RV fast enough to matter, you need to be caught!! Apparently I need one in my toad, got my first speeding ticket in over 40 years in a 4-lane 55 zone on US412. Cost me over $200, but I doubt if a detector would have worked.
There are Places where they have Radar to warn of Roadway Hazards. It is called Sefety Radar. They are not just for Speed. They can alert you to Wrecks ahead for example. - Bionic_ManExplorerValentine or Escort. I have a Escort Passport that I have in two of my vehicles, and a built in Escort in my 3rd. I don't like to go on long trips without them.
And, I am sure that there are posts to follow that they don't work. I will just say that in my experience they have their limitations, but overall they work very well. - sch911ExplorerThe Valentine One is universally considered one of the best. And only $400.
