This is a "feature" not an "issue". The devices or programs have no idea how you would like to go without you giving that input. Some GPS devices won't allow this.
MS Streets and Trip can export a gpx file which I upload to my Garmins. The Garmins may vary slightly between specified route points if they are far apart and there are multiple roads for the unit to choose from.
It is an issue when you are traveling down the road and the darn things wants to take you in a way off route. The Rand has a feature that is supposed to favor the route based on RV or Car usage. Preplanning the route and checking it is important if you don't want to be heading off some goofy route. The Rand took me about 2 miles extra yesterday on a 5 mile trip. Wasn't familiar with the area so I followed it.
I too do a lot of planning with streets and trips and then export them to my Garmin. Some times I have to set up an Avoid area to force Streets and trips to comply to my route preference.
