Twelve years ago when we started snowbirding I home built a 10 channel analog input module that interfaces thermistors and door switches to a WinXP desktop. In the beginning it only dialed out on an alarm. Now, in addition to dialing out on alarm, it emails a status every midnight, a status when ever a door is opened and on a low temperature alarm.
Has it ever been required? Yes, I made the mistake of putting a bug screen over the combustion air inlet to our high efficiency furnace. On night in January there was a sudden drop in temperature outside, the bug screen frosted up and restricted the airflow to the point that the furnace stopped working.
