Satellite Finder

Would like some recommendations on a satellite finder for our Dish
Tailgater. Thanks!!
  • Thought the tailgater found the satellite by itself. I set up my portable dish just using Dish #s. If I am at really low elevations I raise it a couple of degrees as a starting point. The compass on my smart phone seems to work better than regular compass. On some occasions I have to peak the signal using a signal strength meter.

I have tried a few free satellite aps. Never had much luck with them. Probably because I have set it up so many years not using the fancy aps.
  • I use the dishformyrv app on my phone to find a hole thru the trees when finding a good spot to set the Tailgater.

    Tailgater Automatic Right?
  • Older tailgater antennas had to be pointed toward north and then it would find the satellites. The newer tailgaters will find the satellites as long as there is a clearview to the south.

Our tailgater is a few years old and I just put it on the roof of the RV as long as the view is clear to the south it finds the satellites. I did have to move it once because a waving flag would block the signal from time to time.

I've been using this app for about a year. It really makes things easy. Yes, these golf ball antennas are 'automatic' but knowing exactly where the satellites are located can be real beneficial if you are in a campground with lots of trees, poles, even other RVs close by.

The app uses your iphone camera to project 6 red balls, corresponding to the 3 eastern arc and 3 western arc Dish satellites, up in the sky when you point the phone towards the southern sky. Then you know a good starting point for where to set your antenna. For $5 it can save a lot of time when you are trying to shoot around a low hanging tree branch, for example.

I have a Winegard X2 but the process is the same.

  • We use Satellite AR. It's available on the Google app store/Google Play. It's free and it's very easy to use. Has a button to find dish network satellites. It uses the camera on your phone or tablet... Just point it at the sky and follow the arrow and you will see where the satellites are and if anything is blocking your SATs view. We have a Tailgater and yes it's automatic but this helps in actually seeing where the satellites are in the sky.
