Satellite guru advice needed

I have a winguard road trip in motion satellite dish mounted on my RV and had a dish 211K receiver. It worked fine for receiving channels while traveling. However since it was not viewable while traveling, I turned up the sound and used it as a Sirius radio. Although it worked, the sound was terrible.

I just replaced this 211 receiver with a Wally receiver with a usb Bluetooth adaptor on it. The intent is to play the receiver while traveling and pair it with my Bluetooth dash radio and since the Wally has a rf remote, I can change channels easily and have great sound on my dash radio speakers.

I have activated the Wally at home and it works fine with my home satellite dish. I just read on some forum that the Wally needs to see all 3 dish satellites. My questions are:

1. Is this true all the time or only at setup? Will losing satellites while traveling affect it?
2. Do I have to do a check switch with the Wally when I change location from home to RV? If have to do this, please advise how to do it.
  • Wally will not work unless it sees all three satellites. It took a while to figure it out and I am very disappointed. Not sure when DISH will fix the issue if it will be fixed at all. Basically, the "checking switch" screen will stuck forever. It will not give you a warning or notice. When I had VIP211z, at least 211 would give you a choice between rescan or go forward with limited channels. Not on Wally, you cannot move forward unless it sees 3 satellites.

Check switch menu is buried in the setting but if you power cycle, it would come up automatically
  • I am still confused. When I used my old 211k, I also did not get all 3 satellites in some locations. If I got just 129 or 119 I would be satisfied. What I saw on a dish forum was the Wally had to see all 3 satellites or it wouldn't work. Since I activated the Wally on my home system, everything is working fine but I did not have to do a check switch at this time with my home system.

With my 211k when I took it from home to my RV, I would have to do a check switch with receiver. In my Wally settings, I did not see a check switch menu so I am thinking the Wally does this automatically. Since my RV is at storage now, I cannot verify how this Wally will work when I take it from home to the RV.

I am hoping someone here has experience with a Wally and a road trip satellite dome dish on there RV can give my their process in taking the Wally from home and putting it in their RV. Thanks
  • I very often set up and only get one sat with my 211k and pathway. It says you may not get all channels but let's you do it.

    1) All Dish receivers need to be able to see all 3 satellites but only seeing 1 at a time is OK (that's what domes do).
1.5) Losing satellite connection after being properly setup will not effect future use.
    2) Absolutely! Follow the routine shown in your Winegard owners manual or download a copy from the Winegard site online. It is very specific and must be done exactly as described.
