Satellite Questions, (2)

couple of questions.
Can I use a Dish netork dish with a directv receiver?
Can I use the parts from my idle dish network dish on my Wingard Sat on the RV? The LNB and the dish itself?
Thanks

  • What kind of antenna is on the roof? If it's a manually cranked open face antenna the answer is yes (but you won't get all of your programming). If it's an automatic dome antenna the answer is most likely. It it's something else it possible the answer is no.
Give us as much information as possible.
  • I have a similar question. We bought an RV with an existing Direct roof mounted antenna but no receiver. I prefer Dish's no contract. Is there any way to convert this antenna to dish?
  • The Winegard crank-up you have will work fine with your DirecTV receiver. However, you will have to change some settings in the receiver and you will also have to verify that you are not trying to use the new DirecTV H25 or HR34 receivers. These can be made to work but do not work by default.
No matter what receiver you have you will want to go into the receiver setup menu and set it up as an 18" round dish, multiswitch and single or dual tuner if that is an option. Now, proceed to signal meter and then signal strength. Be sure it shows satellite 101 and transponder 1 and search until you find the satellite. It's very hard the first time but gets easier with practice.
  • NO to the first question.

The answer to second question. The dish/lnb combination is probably designed only to work together. Mounting angle to the dish is critical, so using different lnb/dish combination will require some research I would think.

That being said, your crank-up dish should work just fine with Dish Network. You'll have to manually change between antennas to get all the Dish channels, but there should be no problems. On our previous 2003 Pace Arrow, we used the crank-up and were able to get DISH Hi Def with no problem.

  • Thanks.
My issues is that I just got an 1996 Itasca with the Winegard installed, I can not get it to work, I got the az and elevation from the DirecTV dish pointer site, followed the directions and it was pointing exactly opposite of the DireTV dish on my home, so I think something is wrong with the installation. I pointed the Winegard to match the orientation of my home dish, and could never get a signal.
The previous owner, second owner, never used the satellite.
I am thinking that something has failed on the Winegard. I have to test the coax, but since I have a Dish network dish at home, thinking that I could use some parts from it to put on the Winegard, starting with the LNB.
So, there is something proprietary about the satellite antennas that will not let you cross use, is that correct?
I was thinking that actual dish was not the key, but the receiver and the card.
    Thanks.
  • The DirecTV and Dish Network "original" antennas both had only one single LNB (eye ball) and they are identical. If that's what you want to use then it will be compatible but you will be limited to the SD programming only as mentioned above. Otherwise, the Dish and DirecTV antennas are not really compatible.
  • oldguy is mostly right. That being said, the first generation, crank up dishes were pretty generic, so if you only want to receive one satellite at a time with SD only, you may be able to use your Winegard dish/lnb. Actually , the same applies to most of the new portable dishes as well.
