A slow computer (that at one time was fast) is a bad sign that you have a virus, trojan, malware, adware.

THIS IS WHERE YOU NEED TO START LOOKING.

As others have mentioned, Win7 WILL NOT defrag a disk UNLESS WIN7 DEEMS it needs to.

Starting with XP the OS does automatic defrags during "idle" time when nothing is being done with the PC (IE you are not using it and it is turned on). Win7 continued this feature UNLESS you have a SSD drive (which should not be defraged).

Win7 WILL NOT ALLOW defrag to be used if it THINKS you have a SSD drive. If you have a SSD drive the OS is doing what it is supposed to do, PREVENT damage to the SSD drive.

Overall there is NO NEED TO MANUALLY DEFRAG the drive, you are wasting your time, it will not "help" the speed issue.

99.9% of the "slow" PCs folks have brought to me turned out to be extremely infected with virus's (seen one that had 100 virus's and about 8,000 infected files, needless to say reinstalling the OS was the only solution).

I know how to find it. It just does not run.
  • Windows 7 does a good job of auto defrag during idle times. I've never had to fully defrag mine yet.
  • Not in win 7. You need to go to thru the start menu to find it. Typing defrag does not work

  • Do you know if the laptop has a SSD (Solid State Drive) type drive?

SSD types should not be defragged.

Is there a reason as to why you are attempting to defrag? IE slow PC?

Unless you have been adding and removing a lot of software and other files 99.9% of the time defraging a drive is not needed and or does nothing to improve speed.

If you are battling a slow PC then I would recommend skipping defrag and jumping into checking for Malware, Adware and virus's as these are the most common reasons for a PC to get slow.
