Sound Distortion on TV

The 32" RCA LCD that came with our trailer is just over three years old. Recently, it will occasionally put out badly distorted audio after we've backed up a few minutes with the DVR on our Dish 211vip receiver with ac powered external hard drive (to get the DVR feature). It only happens on that TV, which is on HDMI, not the bedroom TV, which is on composite. Simply turning the TV off and back on cures the problem. Any ideas as to what's going on?

Was the hard drive plugged into the same AC outlet as the DVR? If not there may be a ground loop issue that takes out the audio section. Try plugging them into the same wall outlet and see what happens.

They share the same outlet in the bedroom. I don't know if the outlet is on a different circuit from the living room TV that has the problem.

I would have to hear the distortion.. Many things can cause distortion including poor signal from the source (Satellite) and component failure.

Also ground loops. Those (At least) are easy to fix.

  • 1492, I'm not sure where to begin but can start by finding out who RCA is or is owned by these days. My father was with them in its glory days but the brand has been passed around like beans at a redneck supper. Thanks for the information.
  • Could be some issue with the LCD firmware digital sound processing. You may want to check if there an update available, or even if its possible to update it by the end user? May not be?
