If it randomly appears to jump to different parts of the document when you are typing, its most likely being caused by accidentally brushing the trackpad. Some notebooks have a button to temp disable the trackpad, or try reducing the touch sensitivity settings for the trackpad/mouse.

If your laptop has the power brick plugged in when the cursor starts its magic dance, try unplugging the power cord into the laptop. I've see three of them caused by interference from the power brick. My new Lenova windows 8 machine will sometimes do this after being plugged in for a while and simply unplugging the power cord from the laptop for a few seconds will cure it.

My HP may have been something different, but my cursor would also go across the screen by itself once it got into that mode, but it was a finger resting on the pad that would get it going. And it was hard to get out of that habit.
But yes, some music would have helped :))

With my Acer, you didn't even have to be close to the trackpad before the cursor would do this weird dance across the screen. Only thing missing was the music. :B

I have no idea what driver. This is only 1 time in 3-4 yrs, so no problem so far. I did have the other problem you describe in a previous HP, and found it was caused by resting finger on the touchpad while not using it.

Do you have a Synaptics trackpad driver by any chance? I had a similar issue with my Acer Netbook. The mouse pointer would randomly jump, vibrate would be a better word. It would also respond unpredictably. This would only occur in Windows 7, but no issues when running Windows 8 in my dual boot system. Re-booting my Netbook would generally fix the issue.

However, it annoyed me to no end. As the issue would return quite frequently, and an updated Synaptics driver was apparently not available? So I ended up uninstalling it, and loaded Microsoft's generic mouse drive instead. No further issues, except no longer have multi-touch gestures similar to a tablet. But never used them anyway.
