Stand alone mapping software

I have used S&T and Delorme Street Atlas in the past but in the past couple of years had pretty well abandoned Delorme. This year I bought the 2015 Delorme with GPS and have been playing around with it.

I am impressed with the GPS, it acquires the satellites very fast. I miss the POIs that are a part of S&T but there lots of POIs available on-line that work with Delorme, but they have to be loaded into it. I also miss the "Save as" function. It makes it more difficult to take an existing trip, change it and save it as a different trip, but maybe I just haven't figured out how to do it.

In any case I plan to use it next summer and that will be the real test

I have the same question. I have S&T 2013 but sooner or later it will be dated enough to consider alternatives.

I do the same thing BarneyS does. I've got Streets & Trips 2013 and will probably continue using it for my long trip planning.

Where I will have problems is making multiple delivery routes for my Lions Club members to deliver the citrus and roses we sell. New streets within our city and county have been a problem in the past even with current software.

I plan my trips on Streets & Trips 2013 and keep my Garmin GPS up to date with maps at least twice a year. Have found this keeps me pretty much on track where I want to go.

I would not change from S&T. The roads have not changed enough to change.
Sure there is new roads in housing areas and some new by passes.
I am comfortable with 2011 version and keeping my Rand McNally GPS up to date is sufficient.

Ok,lots of ways. I have an external HD & the old laptop with the DVD drive works fine so copy one to the other then install from the external HD.

Now is the Delorme 2015 worth getting over the 2011 MS S&T that I already have? We are 15 to 20,000 mile a year travelers & have done the cross country routes at least 5 times.

Buy the download from Amazon, and save a copy of it to DVD, flash drive, or some such so you've got a separate copy if something crashes. After it's installed you don't need the installation disk/program.

OTOH having a USB DVD drive is pretty handy to have and the program was selling for around $31 for the DVD. USB DVD drives can be had for around $15, but not from an S&B store.

It's unlikely that Street Atlas maps will be much different next year from this year. I usually buy a new copy every other year. It's a waste of money to buy a new copy every year IMO.

There are two ways to do it.

ONE: Head down to Best Buy, Fry's, or the comptuer store of your choice and buy a DVD/CD player/Burner that plugs into the USB port. Last time I was in GA I was given a free netbook, complete with such a device, Though it is a Dell, it works on all the computers I have here.

TWO: Load the DVD onto a any computer that can read it, Go to drive properties (My cmputer right click on the DVD drive choose properties, then Sharing) and SHARE that drive, then install on the laptop via the net from the shared drive (Requires your own router or hot-spot that lets the computers chat w/each other)

If you go with option one you will be set for a long time to come.

Delorme has been running a Black Friday discount this weekend. It may still be there on the website on Sunday if you are thinking of ordering Delorme.

If your laptop is on a network with your PC that has a DVD drive you can share that drive to the network and install software on DVD to the laptop through the network. For on the road DVD access buy a USB portable DVD player/recorder - recently the Blu-Ray USB portable player/recorders have come down in price a lot.
