Stop Microsoft Auto Updates NOW!!

Do not allow the Microsoft auto updates for now on Win 7& 8 machines. If you received one in the last couple days and have not rebooted your computer I would advise against rebooting until you back everything up and see if you can roll back the update.

We had a corrupt MS update totally disable one computer today and another poster on this forum experienced the same thing.

Our computer that is affected is only 4 months old and the Dell Pro Support tech said they have been over run with the problem the last couple days. They have experienced better luck recovering the Win 7 machines than the Win 8 machines.

It does not appear to be a virus but a corrupt boot file that will not permit the computer to boot.

Sorry I am not more up to date technically on this stuff but I would not do an update until this stuff is sorted out.

Perhaps the sky is not falling.
You state we had a corrupt MS update disable a computer.. Who is we and are you passing along something you witnessed happen or something someone told you happened to their brothers, friends, uncles, half sisters, aunt?

My personal work computer (work is we as I own the company) Win 8.1 with the issue. My personal laptop Win 7 updated with no issues. All I can go on is what the Dell tech said and this post.. Obviously this isn't effecting everyone but is is occurring quite frequently according to the service tech. I heard the same from the dispatch tech. I see no reason not to believe them, they are under contract and not getting an extra dime for the service call. Until the source of the problem is corrected I would not allow an automatic update. And yes if it happens to you, it feels like the sky is falling.

  • My WIN 7 Pro update history shows 1 on 3/9/14 and 8 on 3/12/14. Have rebooted a couple of time since then. No issues so far.
  • 2 Laptops and a desktop all running Windows7. All updated in the last couple days. No issues with any of them.
  • My Dell running Windows 8 updated a couple days ago and so far I have not noted any issues. I probably restart it 4 times a day.
  • I'm running Windows 8.1 and haven't seen any issues yet - it did an upgrade a couple of days ago if I recall and everything seems to be running okay so far. I shut it down every night and start it back up in the mornings so if there was a boot issue I think I would have seen something...
