Streets and Maps Software

Hello Everyone,

My husband and I are hitting the road as full-timers this spring and I am considering purchasing the Streets and Maps software to help create our travel itinerary.

If anyone has experience using this I would appreciate your opinion regarding its usefulness, ease of use and any other information you can supply such as where you purchased it.

Thanks in advance.

Leslie
  • If you are looking to just plan an itinerary on your laptop or PC you can use Tyre which is a free download and will allow you to create a route. It uses Google maps and you have the ability to switch to street and earth view for a close look at what to expect the roads it chooses for the routes to be.

If you want to use Streets and Trips on your laptop with its optional GPS usb receiver while you are driving following the route you saved, then many like Streets and Trips. You can purchase it wherever Microsoft software is sold - Best Buy for example or Amazon online. We have tried both Streets and Trips and Delorme's Street Atlas which comes with a usb GPS receiver and we like Delorme best. It has a feature that allows you to use the built in microphone in the laptop to ask questions about the route as you drive and get answers - "how long before we arrive?"; "where are we now?"; "what is the next turn?" and the like. Streets and Trips does not do this.

None of these will route an RV on routes avoiding hazards to an RV for example they do not route taking height restrictions, propane restrictions, or roads not allowing RVs into consideration. You may find yourself on a road on the route that you are not supposed to be on. For that you need an RV-specific GPS.
  • I use Streets and Trips (assuming that's what you mean) and it does a good job but I would not consider it easy to use. It's going to take you a good deal of time to get acquainted with the various options. You will need to learn what a POI is, find the POI files that you are interested in and learn how to install and use them.
The basic navigation (directions from Salem, OR to Bend, OR) is very simple but if you want to take advantage of the numerous other things available there is a pretty steep learning curve.
It can also be used as a GPS if you add an external GPS antenna and you have room for the computer (or tablet) to sit on your dash or side board. I plan with S&T sometimes but I use a Garmin to actually get me there.
  • Hi Leslie,

I don't leave home without my streets and trips. I rough plan on google maps, then fine tune in streets and trips, then use street view in google maps to confirm what I am doing.
