I have the DirecTV Genie HR34 which has been replaced with the smaller/faster HR44. I also have an H25 in the bedroom but could have used a C31/41 client instead. I also ran a coax to the outside TV bay so I can move the H25 outside if I want to watch TV in HD out there (otherwise there is an SD feed). The Genie allows me to watch/record up to 5 different channels simultaneously and different channels on different TV's.
I have a Winegard Trav'ler roof mounted automatic antenna. Only this type antenna or a ground mounted household open face antenna can receive the DirecTV HD programming. No dome type antennas can do this because the one and only LNB inside a dome receives KU band signals only and DirecTV broadcasts their HD on 2 new satellites that transmit on a KA band.
To use a Genie or an H25 receiver you also need a SWM3 LNB or a SWM kit as those boxes will not work with the older DirecTV hardware.
Let me know if you have additional questions.
