After burning up a Sony Vaio, an HP, and a Toshiba I found a cheap ($3.00) and effective fix for any laptop heat problem. I purchased stick on rubber feet that raised the laptop a full 1/4 inch off the table allowing better airflow. ...
Over the years I've owned/used laptops from Toshiba, IBM, Dell, ASUS, Acer, Compaq and Fujitsu. I've never had any of them overheat or burn up. I don't use any stick on feet or those coolers that go underneath. All of them were still in perfect working condition when replaced (I had one Fujitsu for 8 years and an IBM Thinkpad I used for 7 years) and were only replaced because I wanted something "newer, faster, shinier".
I recently sold a 6 year old Acer netbook on Craigslist that was in perfect working order.
IMO, any laptop should last as long as you wish as long as you handle it with reasonable care.
