Traveling with laptop or ipad??

In the past I have always traveled with my trusty laptop to receive / send email and tend to financial matters (when secure connection available)... Now I want to do the same thing but only with my samsung Galaxy 10.1 pad instead of the Windows Laptop. The apps are installed on the pad.. just wondering about the drawbacks (if any) of just using the pad (when using a secure wifi connection)... comments?

  • If you have your email online then no problem. I use Thunderbird and have my email on the computer. It is easiest to move the email from the workstation to either a laptop or small netbook for use when traveling. If I was using gmail instead and did not mind having to be connected to view messages a tablet would be OK though still limiting as I often send or receive attachments and need more storage than a tablet provides and the ability to run applications like Photoshop, Excel, Word, Quickbooks, etc.
  • Try using only the tablet for awhile at home and see how you like it.
  • As long as you don't mind typing on the screen or attaching it to a keyboard.

And don't mind the smaller screen as well..

I use my iPod for these things, but the size of the screen and limited typing ability, even with a stylus is what you give up compared to a laptop..

It's gonna be personal choice really... You can access the internet with your pad, so how do you like it? Can you type stuff easily and can you get by with scrolling around to see the screen?

That's the biggest drawback for me using a "pad"... Even the large screen ones like your 10" one...

I use both, so when I need to do stuff like post to RV.net, I use a laptop.. When I just want to poke around and view stuff, I'll use the pad. The only time I don't like using the pad is when I have to type.

    Good luck!

Are you able to send attachments with your pad If you need to? What about access to any email distribution lists?
The view on a tablet canbe different than the full website.

All of this can be done from any Smartphone or Tablet (Android or iOS). This includes viewing full web sites.
  • I use my tablet probably 95% of the time. Some apps are not as user friendly as the comparable windows program. So carry both just in case.

  • No drawbacks whatsoever.
We traveled all over including the UK with iPad only.
We were able to do all email, banking, live streaming news from home etc.
It held a digital copy of all our papers, maps, tour guides etc.
On the plane I watched my own movies.
