Somebody please explain this...moderators, tekkies, teenage geeks...anyone?
Now I have to reset the Netgear router in the morning.
Could the problem be: a) I hibernated the desktop and no wireless device was using the router, b) Cox cable modem, c) the Tivo connected to the router w/ ethernet/USB adapter instead of phone line, or, d) the cable signal amplifier in the attic ???
Can I use the house phone wiring (not being used by alarm or phone) as an ethernet wire and move the router back to awhere it was (and closer cable connector to the cable amp). The Tivo uses an ethernet to USB hardwire adapter, so if the phone wire idea works, I would need an phone/erner adapter at the router and the Tivo
No, you can not use regular "phone" wire as Ethernet wire unless for some reason someone pulled proper Cat5 Ethernet cable and repurposed it for the phone line. Ethernet cable has very specific characteristics which has a set amount of twists per pair per foot of wire. Standard phone wire is not twisted and not "paired" therefore not within Ethernet specifications.
If you tried to use non twisted pair Cat5 your results WILL vary from no connection to works to perhaps intermittent works.
Cat5 cable can be found at your local Lowes or Home depot with or without the connectors... I would recommend buying premade cables and run with that.
