Ethernet over power lines has been around forever. go look for reviews on amazon.
they are perfectly safe
There are a lot of things out there that are "perfectly safe" until something out of the ordinary happens like power surges or even nearby lightning strikes.
Ethernet over power lines is the same idea as the old TV antenna device which used your home wiring as a "antenna". Open one of those up and you simply find nothing more than a capacitor and inductor "network" to "isolate" the 120V from the antenna "output".
The only difference with Ethernet over 120V is there is additional circuits involved but you STILL have a "potential" point of failure which CAN present lethal voltages in failure mode. Mixing high voltage with low voltage stuff is not really a smart thing to do.
Its your life, equipment and home to do what you like with but myself I like to keep low voltage items like Ethernet far, far away from 120V as possible...
