Upgrade to Geni

I have the non HD dome on the MH and want to know what I will have to do to get a Direct TV Geni from the house to work in the MH. I know it will not be HD. I have been swapping the older DVR but want to upgrade the house to the Geni setup.
How much?

Thanks

  • They will use a SWM3 LNB built into the antenna they install and not a SWM8 switch.
  • I called Directv today and wanted to swap out a 24 for another (second) 34 or a new 44. They said NO WAY, only one Genie per account. Not sure why but suspect it is due to shortage and not technical. I wanted to leave my 34 at home and take another Genie with me. From what I read, even if I ordered and paid for myself, Directv would not allow activation.
  • Thanks for the great info from everyone.

I have ordered the Geni setup for the house, instal next Thurs. I would like to know what type system they use for a new instal, the Swm8 switch or the Swm LNB to the receiver? I would like to be able to receive the OTA TV in the house in case the sat goes out or Direct follows cable and stops carrying some channels. I think the Swm switch has a port for the OTA antenna and that would be the same setup that I will use for the MH.

    Thanks

  • OP, make sure your understand the dome with a SWM8 will only give you SD. If you want HD, it's the Trav'ler SK-SWM on the roof or a Slimeline on the ground. For ground mounting, a TV4RV.com HD combo Kit is great. The Trav'ler is automatic while ground-mounting requires manually aiming the dish. Some find that daunting while others find it a snap. For me it's normally a kind of fun fifteen minutes. Tools ranging from nothing to several hundred dollars are available to get it done. I think the minimum required is a compass and a level. Some just use the box by trial and error.
  • I use an old slimline dish on a tripod. You do need the swm lnb, a splitter, and a power inserter. That is the only way, other than purchase a $1600.00 traveler, to get HD. I used tv4rv.com for the tripod, meter, and various items necessary to level and secure the tripod.
  • Pretty sure the HR34 is SWM only so you'll need a Winegard SK-SWM (or SK-3005 with a SWM conversion) roof mount or a Slimeline dish on a tripod on the ground. The dome might do SD only with a SWM conversion but that I don't know much about.

Maybe bill.winegard will pop as he is in the business.

You might also search winegard swm and come up with some instructional PDF's.
