Verizon Home Connection - Internet

Thanks for the link jhilley. I don't think a lot of the responders understand what I was talking about. I have had the home connect service since April and have not had problem one. Live in a town of 13,000 ten miles from the closest Interstate and have an acceptable 4G signal without an extender.

Had Sprint service for many years before switching to Verizon in April. Sprint service was OK when I lived in Texas but did not have as good coverage in this area. I think they were the provider that built most of their towers along the Interstates.

That may be the case in northern California, bu most urban areas have cell towers every where. I live in a town of 350 in North Dakota and we have one in town. I ported my land line, three years ago and went with a Network Extender that acts as a Mini Cell Tower in my house. I wouldn't need that now that we have a tower right in town, but I still do.

We used this service on a trial basis and after 10 days found it to be a real data hog. We found it fast and pretty stable but the cost was going to be excessive. We returned it and were glad they gave us that trial period.

We have the verizon hot spot and have had to increase our "share everything" data usage twice to allow us to have enough gigabytes to surf some and email some, but not watch movies for fear of using up our allowance.

Both Verizon & AT&T (as well as some other providers) offer 2 different systems for your home.

Their Home Connect system is a cell based method of tying your existing home phone network or a wireless (non-cell) phone to a cell based system. It does not require an existing internet connection, but does require the ability to connect to a cell tower. The basic unit does not provide data connections.

They also have a system that extends cell coverage using a device that is essentially a small "cell tower" tied to an existing high speed internet connection - the VOIP system MrWizard referred to. Verizon calls it the Verizon Network Extender. This device allows you to use your cell phones in a location that does not have adequate cell coverage as long as you already have a high speed internet connection.

From the description of the original plan, it looks like a repackaging of Verizon's services. They have had a plan that adds their Home Connect service to their "Share Everything" plan for $10.00 per month (and 2 year contract). This looks like the same thing going in the other direction.
