I use Pay-as-you-go Verizon. It works good for me, I buy $100 3x a year. I don't need internet (although it's available) because I have an ipad. The phones available through Verizon for this service are crummy and hard to text with. On the website they say I can use my own device and register it with them. If I look at Amazon to buy an iphone for this what should I look for? I think I need an unlocked Verizon iphone with a simm card. Is this correct? Thank you for you help.

Will Verizon let you bring an unlocked phone to the plan you have? While GSM pay as you go carriers don't seem to a problem with this, the CDMA no contract carriers don't always let you. Things are changing all the time, and the best way is, as mentioned, is to talk to Verizon.
As far as I understand the contract free Iphone 6, that Apple sells, is unlocked, and can be used on any network.
