Warning - DIRECTV related SCAM
I called DTV to get some technical advice about my RV setup.
The person who answered the call thanked me for being a customer and asked why I called. I told her that I wanted technical advice about making some changes to my RV configuration. She said she would transfer me to Tech Support.
After a minute on hold, someone answered from tech support. She gave me a sales pitch to get me to sign up to one of DTV's service plans - priced at $8 to $20 per month. I said that I just wanted to talk to a technician about changing my cabling setup in the RV.
She said OK, she would transfer me to a technician.
I held for a short time and someone else answered identifying himself as "DIRECTV Enhanced Support". He told me that I was such a good customer, I was qualified to receive enhanced support and proceeded to tell me how good the support was (new equipment at any time, technician on site at any time, etc. etc. etc. And the plan only cost $2.50 per month. He promised a lot more stuff too. I locked my good judgement in a hole in the ground and said OK. He passed me to someone else who took my credit card number, then told me that they were a company separate from DIRECTV, and ended the conversation.
I called DIRECTV and asked them what was up. They said that they had no idea. I pointed out that they had transferred me to those people - whom I had never heard of before, and wouldn't have known how to contact them myself. They said no - they didn't transfer me to an outside number.
I called VISA, and found that they had registered the charge immediately, but I can't protest it until they booked the charge in a few days. I cancelled my VISA just in case they might try to use the number for something else.
I did an internet search and found that other people had been transferred by DIRECTV to this Enhanced Service operation before, even though DIRECTV denied that it could have happened.
