Why I went from Verizon Unlimited Data to More Anything

I gave up and did the plan and device upgrade.
I was on the National plan at 700 min, no text, UNLIMITED data. One smart phone and one dumb.
My Droid X has been giving me fits as it just keeps getting slower. (Known problem with these phones) At times it takes several min just to make an outgoing call. Not good. To make it work better I have to remove the battery and reboot. It did work better when I removed facebook from it and install apps to manage memory. Helped some but still no good.
So I gave up and went to the Verizon web site... It would not let me upgrade phone using Verizon Edge and at the same time change plans from the National to More Everything..
Was told via Verizon chat to change phone and later change plans. NOT
I did get a human online later after much effort who did it for me.
Now the difference in the plans...
I had National 700 min, no text , and Unlimited data for $115
With the new More Everything plan is $60 Normally $70 but $10 off when using Edge to buy the new S5 phone. That plan for one smartphone and one dumb phone. Data plan $60 normally $70 but another $10 off with the Edge phone buying plan. So new plan total $120 old plan was $115.
So with the new plan I get $10 off the voice plan and $10 off the Data plan if using Edge to buy the phone (which is $24.95 for 2 years) so $20 off of the old national plan... it about pays for the new Samsung G S5 phone. The More everything plan with Edge is a month to month no plan contract, just a contract to buy the phone.
Now I get unlimited voice (we had been right at the edge of the 700 min limit and had to pay for more time one month at $20 for more mins.

Bottom line I now get unlimited voice , unlimited text, and Personal Hotspot, can get Wi-Fi enabled devices online, at no extra cost. Now don't have to use PdaNet which was only working USB and not WiFi on my Droid X anymore. I think Verizon stopped PadNet working WiFi and it only works for a few min until it would stop. Think Verizon was watching and shutting me down it when they saw heavy data traffic. So the unlimited data was getting to not be so unlimited for me.
OK so I lost my unlimited data. But I had been using under 3G anyway. Only used it when my Datastorm RV dish internet wasn't working when traveling. At our winter place have WiMax unlimited so don't use the cell phone for data at all then. I will get another 1G for $15 if I go over and as the person at Verizon told me they send two text mesgs. if I'm close and I can go and upgrade my data plan to 4G for $10 at anytime and for only a month if needed without effecting my voice plan.
These cell phone costs are just crazy but we all have them don't we. Going to love the great camera feathers in the Samsung Galaxy S5.
So for $5 more in plan costs I get unlimited voice and text, free hotspot and 3 G of data. I can live with that.
So there you have it my long contemplated Verizon upgrade.

  • If you did a factory reset on the phone it would speed it up considerably. Also you could have bought a new phone and kept unlimited. The guy at the verizon store showed me how. Just buy the phone for your other line than go back and switch it to the line with the unlimited data. Then you can keep your unlimited plan. Also, foxfi is the app that let's you make any phone a hotspot even without that option from verizon. pdanet doesn't work that great.
  • I hate to break this to you but unlimited voice will become a meaningless concept as Verizon implements "Voice over LTE" on its 4G network. Voice calls will become data and, over time, you will no longer be charged for minutes, just the data used by them.

Here's Verizon's recent announcement on the subject: VoLTE

Just wondering........did anyone tell you that you could use a dumb phone upgrade (New every two years) to upgrade the smart phone to keep Your unlimited data plan?

BTW.........my now almost 3 year old Moto Bionic is so slow that sometimes when a call comes in it goes to voice mail before the phone allows me to answer it.....I can see who's calling but the button to take the call is unresponsive......I can't wait to get rid of this thing......
    Enjoy your S5!

I had that problem on incoming calls after about 3 rings goes to VM. Worked with Verizon tech support. They tried several things but couldn't improve it. Another reason to dump the Droid X and upgrade.

I tried that route updating dumb phone to a smart phone and after 14 days moving the phone back to the old smart phone. Believe me I had studied that concept and talked to several independent Verizon dealers. It seems that may or not have been blocked now. The whole idea was to make sure you waited beyond the 14 day return limit. After the 14 day you owned the phone and should be able to move it back and forth.
But in my case I can get unlimited voice (not 700 min) (hotspot) and 3G for only $5 more a month by combining the More Everything plan with Verizon Edge. And be able to go to up by 1Gs for $10 each if I need it. Since I have another source of internet access in my RV with Datastorm and at my winter location I only need Verizon hotspot data when the other sources are not working. If it was my only internet access I would never give up Unlimited data. As I said in my orig post it seemed Verizon was not really giving me unlimited data as if used for web surfing it seemed to come to a halt after awhile. I know I know giving up unlimited pains me to no end but now with unlimited voice and hotspot it just makes sense to me to change.
