WiFi booster?

With everyone using smartphones the available bandwidth is almost nothing Getting on line with a computer is getting harder. Is there something out there to boost available signal? Eventually will buy a smartphone and create my own hot spot, but not today.
  • This might work well. It is rated 'strongest on the market'.

    Amazon.com

While 'strongest on the market' is a great claim, the FCC will limit the power output to only a watt or two, so all would be equally weak signal, so that you are not disrupting the Wi-Fi system a mile away with your overly strong signal. . .

You basically point it to the signal, and it will spend all it's energy focused in one direction, so that you have the best chance of getting a strong signal.

    Good luck,

    Fred.
  • I bought a directional Wi-Fi antenna that plugs into my USB port. At one campground, where Firedude was camp host, his RV was about 800 feet from mine, and I was able to get a signal by placing my antenna in a zip lock baggy, tie wrap it to my refrigerator roof vent, and then run a 6' extension USB cable to my computer.

Basically I had the antenna pointed towards his fifth wheel, and he had a satellite antenna that acted as a hot spot for the whole campground, with his permission of course.

It was a Hawkings brand antenna. It was also back in 2007, so I am sure that in the past 8 years external antenna's have improved greatly, as well as internal antenna's have greatly improved as well.

Signal strength will not improve your access speed, but it can lack of signal will slow it down. So if there are 20 others sharing a 1Mb/second line, you will not get to much faster, but if your internal Wi-Fi antenna strength is weak, it will surely help to use a external antenna.

For the next couple of days try using the computer outside. If that improves the signal strength and thus speed, then an external antenna that you can hang out the window will really help you, as your UV reduction coating on the glass might also be reducing the signal strength through the walls and glass.

    Good luck,

    Fred.

I thought he was referring to the fact that smartphones can connect to the same wifi as his computer.

If your not buying a smart phone and using cellular bandwidth

    what is the question about

smart phone bandwidth has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with campground wifi, cable dsl or fios or satellite internet

    what is your question

Check out this blog. They test all theses things and report their findings.

Yes, but that isn't likely to help much with the problem you describe.

  • This is similar to what I did

It helps, especially if the signal is far away. But, most of the issue is due to not enough bandwidth. Think of everyone on the campground trying to get water out of one garden hose. When everyone is using it, you get a trickle out of your faucet. But, when everyone is asleep, you can get some water to finally fill your glass.
