Most modern phones use new voodoo to talk to the tower that boosters haven't caught up with yet.
Namely SU-MIMO and MU-MIMO. So if your phone has a decent signal, strapping it into a booster will likely make reception worse because the boosters do not support MIMO technology. However if you're on the boundary of a coverage area (say -113 or worse) then a booster will help because the phone has regressed to using a more primitive signal that the booster can understand.
