Wilson Sleek Question

I own a Wilson Sleek Booster that I am using with a Verizon 2200 MiFi device. I use it with the included 4" magnetic antenna mounted on a 10' pole outside of my trailer. On top of the pole I have a 6" diameter metal circle that I attach the antenna to. I currently an in Las Vegas and having a problem. Using the MiFi device and the booster my speed test is .26 mbps up and .12mbps down. If I remove the unit from the booster the test speeds are .74 up and .26 down.
Any ideas what could be the issue?
  • its unusual to have upload speeds faster than Dl speeds

and I would also say you are on a saturated cell tower

and the tower is limiting the stronger signal as a way of trying to control that congestion
  • Those speeds are terrible for Verizon LTE, especially in a major metro area.

Have you contacted VZW support? They are very responsive, especially through twitter @vzwsupport

It could be the tower is saturated, but I would imagine a mad house like Vegas is engineered with a lot of capacity.

If you are eligible, trade up to a newer jetpack with xLTE support. On an updated tower in a big city, I see 50-60mbit up and down over xLTE on my Moto Pure.

I've actually stopped using my Sleek, in most cases my Moto performs better without, and I'm not sure my older 4g Sleek supports the new xLTE band.
  • I think his novatel 2200 mifi is on 3G
and its still slow for 3G

he didn't say where in Vegas
but with thousands of people concentrated in the area of strip you can expected to be heavily congested with cell traffic
  • The booster may be getting overloaded by signal and causing electrical noise. If the device works better with it off, by all means leave it off. Some devices can go into a feedback mode much like a speaker and microphone when they get too close.

I like YC1's answer about being overloaded. I think they tell you in the manual to have the outside Antenna separated by a certain amount of distance for best performance etc...

The WILSON SLEEK is a passive close proximity connection to the device which could open the door for being overloaded by a close-by signal in the same frequency range...

I use the same 3G setup using the MIFI 2200 and up to five connected devices when we are in travel mode as well as being parked at our camping location... The WILSON SLEEK with its outside antenna being our docking station for the MIFI 2200 gives us great coverage around our camp site using our tablets etc...

If we want to setup on the beach somewhere just grab the small MIFI unit and pack along in the shirt pocket works great with our tablets sitting on the beach...

Usually have great performance however the MIFI 2200 is not the fastest connection. Even in its best connection situation it is very slow for us to use.

Does what we want it to do for a good low price of $27 a month for a 3GB data plan with Verizon being grandfathered over the past few years... All we need to do is check our emails, keep in touch with the kids, pay a few bills, and do some limited searches on the internet. Not good enough to do any downstreaming of HDTV or movies etc...

I do however load it down with a couple of my favorite BROADCASTIFY LIVE INTERNET RADIO SCANNER channels with no problems... Always like to keep touch with our local Home town Police and Fire Dept/Rescue situations when we are gone...

  • Retest late at night or very early in the AM (when most people are in bed). If you get better numbers, the tower is overloaded (which is where I would put my betting money if I was in Vegas), if you get about the same, there is another factor involved.
  • Lots of possibilities, including the fact that many locations around Vegas have never been well served by Verizon. You should also be aware that for the last couple years, Verizon has been converting a lot of their previous 3G spectrum into 4G. So available 3G bandwidth in many areas has gone down significantly as the world has moved to 4G. You should update your device to 4G and get a better antenna. That 4" antenna that comes with the Sleek is better than no antenna, but not by much.

    x2

I missed that the OP's device was 3g. As far as Verizon is concerned, 3g is discontinued and unsupported... they're only keeping it around for resellers and roaming agreements with other CDMA carriers as far as I'm aware. All their recent capital investment has been in LTE and now xLTE bandwidth.

Time for a new jetpack, or a carrier agnostic phone like the Moto X Pure, Nexus 6, HTC One, and a few others.
