You can subscribe to Office 365 which, as long as your subscription is current, allows you to download and install the latest version of Office.

Don't forget, an Office 365 subscription also gives you a 1TB storage quota on OneDrive, rather than the 15GB minimum quota.

If you're working with multiple computers, Office 365 Home, gets the same coverage for up to 5 PCs at a time -- for less than Office 365 Personal for 2 PCs a year.

Since the cloud subscription price I was paying on other services costs as much as the O365 subscription price, I look at it as buying my cloud storage and getting Office for free!

(And, yes, Bumpy, I DO also use a portable HD for additional backup. "Belt & suspenders.")

You can also outright purchase Office 2016 which is a one-time purchase.

That's the way it is today but things are migrating toward cloud based software using the subscription model.

It's not just MS, the software industry as a whole is moving in that direction.

That's true, many of the programs (Adobe, Photoshop) are going to a 'subscription' based service too, where you pay by the month or lose the service.

I waited until just recently to upgrade my Win 7 to Win 10 since Microsoft has a history of releasing buggy software out of the gate. I figured after 6 months they would have most of the bugs worked out.

I must say the conversion went very well and everything works without a hitch and I have a lot of older programs running that had no issues at all, so I say, go for it before the free period ends. Support for WIN 7 will end in a few years anyway.

I upgraded from W8.1 to W10 quite a while back. I have no issues with w10, but I also liked W8.1. I recently sold my old XP machine. It was fun to play with. I reinstalled the OS several times after I screwed it up experimenting.

Bob - Made me go back and read the original question myself haha... The Title is about all I read I guess... I did catch about MS OFFICE 2007 but that was reading from another post to the subject...

I was hesitant too at first but went ahead and did the 8.1 machines and they went without hitch. Then I had to read up on what others were doing to get the WIN 7 machines to work.

The part I didn't like about what MS did was offer a couple of programs that was included but was only good for a year from the fine print. Then when you tried to not load those in the beginning was kinda of hard to do...

I'm also not all the enthused about living in the cloud for storage of everything... that is really scary for me...

I remember DOS. Just threw away a DOS for Dummies book the other month. And a bunch of 5-1/4" floppies.

I've upgraded. no big issues. a short learning curve. nothing to witch about.
