Just a note
Going out of your way to grab W7 currently means you have only 6 more years of MS security patches.
Now they may bend after this W8 rollout's reputation and as yet unknown impact, but just sayin'
If the Enterprise (business/companies) systems continue to "pan" Windows 8-they (MicroSoft) will keep it a feasible system!
CORRECT!
"8" IS NOT a "business" oriented OS, never was and never will.
Many businesses have rather large infrastructure, software, systems and bunches of computers. They can not just flippantly flip the OS switch without extensive research and testing of all systems, and software. Then they must develop a rollout plan for the upgrades, this takes considerable time, money and man power to do so. Many businesses will often take several years before they will be able to make a move from one OS to another.
MS releases a "new" OS nearly every year, businesses simply are not able to make such changes in that time frame. MS understands that.
Believe it or not not only XP is still well entrenched in the business world so is NT4, W2000, DOS 6.22! There are literally MILLIONS of what is know as "embeded" systems in operations as of today which are still purring along happily doing their jobs 24/7/365.
The company I work for is still shipping out XP systems for our customers which are not in any position to move on to another OS and so far I have not seen any drop in this. Have orders PAST the MS patch date and still going.
Even one of our industrial products which has a PC embedded inside it is still running one DOS6.22, probably more reliable than a Windows environment (The DOS6.22 OS just doesn't foul up and doesn't complain).
Folks you simply need to chill out, just because MS ends MINOR patches, it doesn't mean that your PC is really any more "vulnerable" than it was. It just means that they won't be actively seeking out and fixing the 1 in ten billion chance security problems any more.
They will however still issue occasional CRITICAL patches but it will no longer be a scheduled thing.
By the way, even if you installed every single patch issued it really doesn't mean your PC is "safer". I have PERSONALLY had fully patched PCs with active A/V software running and hiding behind a strong fire wall go down in flames turning into into a quivering door stop.
If you are this afraid, then I would suggest you pull the plug on your PC and don't ever boot it onto the Internet...
You as an individual can decide to make a OS switch as fast as you like whenever you like as long as you don't mind buying new software, hardware and spending countless hrs sorting out how to find your stuff again.
I personally get bored watching folks dig through the sands of time with those silly screen gestures. I have better things to do with my time instead of wading through hundreds of "tiles" on the Metro screen.
Heck my PC at work I have at a min of 40 of my most used desktop programs and shortcuts right on my desktop screen. I can access them quickly with just a quick movement of my mouse. It would take hundreds of "swipes" with a finger to find and open them with Metro. Thats how silly it is...
