Windows XP Support to End April 8, 2014

Ok, all you Windows XP owners, including me, Microsoft will no longer be supporting twelve year old XP as of April 8, 2014. What this means is that XP will no longer get any updates. They will continue for a time to support security software. They suggest that you upgrade to a new computer with Windows 8.1, or upgrade your system to Windows 8.1 if your computer is capable of handling it. You may want to do all available XP upgrades prior to April 8. After they stop updating security software you are advised to not access the internet with your XP machines. That means you will not want to browse or email via XP. You can continue to use XP for your applications that don't require internet access.

I have my two DELL M90 Work station LAPTOPS doing all of my computer ops for both home and RV operations. These DELL M90s were purchased from OFF-LEASE sales more than 6 years ago and still work just fine for me.

Using the DELL DOCKING stations I have duplicated both operations where all I do is move my M90 High End LAPTOP from one location to the other. There is very minimal differences involved with the operations. Both locations support dual screens, keyboard and mouse, sound system, special applications for my emergency radio operations, etc... Never raise the lid on the M90 Laptops. Just pull it from one location and plop it into the other location. About the only difference in operations is the house location has better speed. Of course when away from the house location i have to log into my email providers to be able to send emails from the RV locations. Works out great for us using our VERIZON MIFI setup when on the road...

These M90 DELL LAPTOPS run on WIN XP-PRO and I have software for my projects etc that I am sure will have to be updated to run on WIN 7 let along WIN 8 and above. Will be a big cost for me to upgrade the operating systems.

  • I'm sure that's at least partially true, but it's true of practically any computer company, too. And it's also true that users have far greater demands on machines and software now.

  • Go ahead and switch. As long-time computer users with all manner of OSs since the late 70s (TRSDOS, MSDOS, Unix, Win 3.1, Win 98, Win XP, Win Vista, Win 7, and Win 8.1), we've learned that there is a little learning curve each time, but also benefits. Believe it or not, they have improved with time!

Yet another doom and gloom demise of your XP post because it didn't get anymore highly unlikely security "fixes" which tend to break your XP posts...

rrupert I hate to burst your news bubble, but that is very old news and not to mention subject to daily change...

Additionally there are MILLIONS of PCs using XP and will continue to use XP out there which are highly entrenched and firmly not changing in MANY businesses. With nearly ALL of those CONNECTED to the Internet.

    Why?

Simply put, there are many companies which use multiple systems and softwares which either are not readily adaptable or have been found to not play well with the changes made with Win 7 or even W8.

It also takes considerable manpower to install and test all of these systems to ensure nothing gets broken along the way.

Many companies also DO NOT allow any of their PCs to directly access MS Update servers. Instead the IT department SCREENS EACH UPDATE RELEASE and tests it before rolling out the update to their PCs.

The IT departments also will not pass all updates to their PCs, basically only allowing HIGH PRIORITY MAJOR security risk patches.

If you were smart you would take a cue from this, set your Update to ALERT you to updates but not install them automatically.

    The reason for this?

Simply put, sometimes the patches are not ready for prime time and can cause major headaches for you if you blindly accept all.

For instance, Win7 had a major blunder concerning .net 3.51 security patch. The update continually FAILS causing your PC to continually attempt to install the failed update. Blindly allowing all updates without at least reading up on them WILL one day bite you in the behind..

I for one do not blindly install all updates...
