Winegard Trav'ler Portable Setup?

I have been a faithful Winegard Carryout user for years and finally made the switch to HD. Being a DirecTv subscriber, I realize my options are pretty well limited to the Trav'ler. Here's where the wrinkle comes in...I want to set it up on a tripod or stand and use it in a similar fashion to the Carryout. I never invested in the Carryout tripod as I found that the rubber feet on the bottom of the dome fit snugly & securely across the top of my 4' fiberglass step ladder and I've always liked to travel with the ladder anyways as it's so useful around the campsite. My question is this...has anybody else tried to adapt something like the Carryout tripod for Trav'ler use with any success? Yes, I know it's heavy and not exactly an ideal situation, but I'm a big, strong guy and pretty handy to boot. Any line voltage wiring or coax needs are not a problem as I am an electrician. Without having anyone else's experiences to rely on, I'll probably fashion up a plate of some type to attach to the top of the ladder and give it a go myself, but I thought I'd toss it out here first for some guidance and direction.

  • I once saw a Trav'ler mounted on a plywood platform c-clamped to a picnic table at one campground. Apparently they stowed it in their pickup while underway towing their TT. My tripod and dish setup typically takes me 10-15 minutes to assemble and align, and cost a heck of a lot less than a Trav'ler. ;)
  • The Travler weighs about 80 pounds ready to go. Not something you want to pack around more than once. It makes a wide arc when finding the birds. And without being set on a stable platform likely wont work well. I think you would be better off spending a buck fifty on a quality tripod and oval SWM dish assembly.
