Winegard Wingman Installed

Just installed a Winegard Wingman on my TT antenna. Did a new channel scan and ended up with the same 33 channels I received without it.

I expected to get a couple of additional channels a little bit farther away.

Is there anything I need to know to receive additional channels?
  • Is the Wingman properly aimed at the transmitter towers for the stations you expected to receive?
  • Pointing is the critical factor. You can use an Android app called TV Antenna helper or you can go on line to sites like www.tvfool.com to set your location and determine the location of the towers where your programming is being broadcast.
You may also have unrealistic expectations. The Wingman cannot perform magic. It can only pull in a weak signal but cannot make a non-existent signal appear.
  • I upgraded to a Sensar VI which had the wingman built in. I replaced a older batwing which I think had expired due to heat. I immediately saw a great increase in signal strength and stations received. There were a few posts on here some time ago with detailed numbers with and without the wingman. There was some improvement in distant stations, but nothing to make just adding the wingman worth it.
  • As Bill has said your antenna may not be able to get anything if it is not there. I use the app he mentioned,TV Antenna Helper to get the direction of the broadcast towers.

I use the Rayzar to get multi directional reception from farther distances and pick up broadcasts giving me a larger area to pick from. I have no room for the Wingman.
