I'm also going to advise to get a laser. Not printing often will also cause ink cartridges to dry up. You also say you don't want to fool with a router but you will need to a have a wifi network for your printer. I don't know of one that broadcasts it's own network.
I bought a Brother HL 2380DW black and white laser. It prints off wi-fi and prints duplex including from my iPad. I love it. You can see if there is a color version. I already had an inkjet so I kept for the rare occasion when I need to print in color. It does scan in color I believe.
I use walgreens, shutter-fly or a high end online print service for photos depending on my needs. You can have digital photos printed as 4x6 through shutter-fly much cheaper than at home and some can be picked up at CVS or Walgreens.
