Wireless router??

I live in the sticks and just got hooked up to Fiber optic internet with phone soon to come. I signed up for 30mbps for $40 a month. This is through the local electric co-op & a government grant. They are all out of routers and suggested I go to Walmart to get one. However, there were no suggestions as to which one to get. I more than realize there many choices out there so I'm asking what to get for the least $$$ and the most range.. I'd like to have wi-fi in my shop which is about 250 ft from the house. My Centurylink & an old Netgear are just DSl routers and can't be used. Any advise?
  • You don't say if the broadband (fiber optic) modem is already there? If not a router is not going to help at this point since there's nothing to connect it to...
  • How long do you plan on keeping the setup? How many devices do you have that need to be connected? How many wired/wireless? How much do you want to spend?

The technology in routers in terms of wireless speed and features are always expanding. You can go low end for something very basic, or look at something like an Asus RT-AC66U near the top or an RT-AC3200 at the top.

It all depends on what you need and how long it will be until you refresh your tech systems.
  • I bought a TP-LINK Wireless TL-WR841N N300 for $19.99 on Amazon 2 weeks ago. Installation was a breeze and it seems pretty full-featured and works great.

  • About ten days ago, I bought an Apple Time Capsule. I mainly bought it as a way to back up my OS X machines, but it does have some decent functionality as a basic wireless router, allowing for two SSIDs, your main one, and if you want to enable it, a secondary guest network.

If you want advanced functionality like custom access control rules (for example, blocking outgoing traffic to malware sites), look elsewhere, but for basic use, it isn't too bad.
