Yahoo now wants phone# to get an email account

I've found that nothing beats a prepaid phone from a GSM provider. I use GSM because I can get a new account without having to replace the phone. When I have to create an account and the website demands a number, I'll blow $15 on a low-end phone, use it for stuff for a month or two, destroy the SIM card, then use the same phone with another SIM card from the same telco.

I'm not surprised that websites are starting to actively demand phone numbers. Just a next step up.
