1994 Tioga 460 Ford No passing gear

Looking at a 1994 Tioga Class C motorhome with a Ford 460. When I test drove it and put the pedal to the metal the engine speed increased, but it didn't kick down into passing gear. This sure doesn't seem normal. Any ideas, comments, suggestions, and input appreciated.

  • Are you sure you want to work the engine hard on a 20-year old Class C?
  • That transmission would be an E40D with the small button on the end of the shifter stalk. You WOULD have a shift down from "overdrive" to third gear. If you don't have the button on the stalk, you have the older three speed transmission with could still drop down a gear at certain lower speeds.
  • Did it shift OK otherwise? is he trans fluid full/clean? if so then it sounds like a cable/adjustment. I too would have a good Ford trans specialist check it out. I think that year trans had a couple issues, I don`t remember if that was one of them.
  • I would have a mechanic check it out prior to purchase and if nothing serious then I would use that as a bargaining tool to get the price down or walk away if it something else.

Don't be too hasty to assume that it is not something too serious. Yes, it could be as simple as the TV cable or it could be something substantial in the internals of the transmission such as pressure switches, solenoids, internal mechanical linkages and so on. Even three speed autos have a kickdown gear which is nothing more than a forced downshift to second gear, again controlled by a shift linkage rod or a TV cable. All I'm saying is check it out carefully, don't just accept the first easy answer.

    Cheers!

  • Depend if it the older 3-speed transmission or a 4-speed. The older ones didn't have a "passing gear".
  • The simplest thing might only be the TV cable (that's the transmission control cable) misadjusted or a mounting loose somewhere. Look for a cable from your throttle linkage to the transmission.
