I think the suggestion of two class C rentals is a good one. I would suggest you pick one area to concentrate on. Trying to do too much will just equal a lot of driving. This wont go over well with small children. Myself personally, I would choose the Grand Canyon area, and southern Utah. World class scenery. You could start in Las Vegas, or Phoenix. I have only done these in the winter months, but someone else might be able to suggest the best off season time to see these places. I would think after school starts in September, it would be less crowded, but the weather would still be nice. My second choice would be northern California and Yellowstone area.
Thank you for offering your perspective and advice.
We ruled out 2 RVs because of two considerations:
1. sharing the drive
2. our families can entertain each other while we drive.
But we will "consacrate" to one area. The problem might be arriving there from LA airport and your ridiculously low speed limits! We will fall asleep! Two of us will share the driving. Wives have no intentions whatsoever to drive. Remember, we are Italians and over here women work differently. They take all the decisions and blame us if we don't execute them "right" and they have driving licenses but prefer to relax during the holidays and other excuses... so, no drivig for the ladies.
Grand Canyon, so far, is number one on our list (3 votes out of 4) but I am voting for other parks where we can do rafting, fishing, canoeing, mountain biking, etc. (Yellowstone and Yosemite). But we love America so much that we will return every year (unless we actually relocate to the US) so no hurry to pick one or another.
School is not an issue. Visiting nature Parks in the US is worht missing school for and very educational.
Period of year is not an issue either. Both our jobs allow us freedom and we can work from a laptop (network engineer and oil trader).
LAX airport is a constraint as cheap flights from Rome land there (of SF). Smaller airports would add travel time and we are already stretching it with the present 18 to 22 hours as it is (we fly from Naples, Italy).
